Questions about cannabis should not stop you from talking openly with your VA care team. The VA says marijuana use does not by itself mean a veteran will be denied VA benefits, and participation in a state program does not affect eligibility for VA care and services.
What the VA can and cannot do
VA clinicians can discuss cannabis as part of treatment planning, but they cannot recommend medical marijuana or complete state-program paperwork. VA pharmacies do not dispense it and VA does not pay for it. Cannabis possession and use are prohibited on VA property.
Prepare for the conversation
Write down your goals, what you currently use and any concerns about other treatment. Ask how cannabis could affect your existing care plan. Seek Ohio certification through an appropriately qualified recommending physician outside the VA process.
Ask about cost before booking
Ask the physician about any veteran pricing, documentation needed, follow-up costs and refund terms. Ask each dispensary separately about veteran discounts. We do not promise a discount or approval.
